DEREK SHAPLAND: Critique

Cocker Spaniel Club of Victoria Inc. 77 Championship Show

18th February 2012.

I would like to thank the Officers and Committee of the club for affording me the opportunity to judge the cocker spaniels at their Championship show. It was a great honours and I thoroughly enjoyed my day .

I thank all of the exhibitors some of whom had travelled many many miles to be at the show for their sporting behaviour in accepting all the decisions and placings that I made.

All of the exhibitors should be congratulated on the presentation of their cockers. The coats were all clean and almost without exception very expertly trimmed.

Overall I was impressed at the depth of quality in many of the classes. Some exhibits lost out in the final placings due to poor movement. I think this is partly attributable to many of the cockers being in such soft muscular condition. Others did not show so well in the heat of the afternoon . However all of my principal winners pleased me a great deal, their quality made some of the final top honours very close decisions.

Veteran 1 (abs 0)

1.GR CH ROYONI HES TRUE BLUE.

A 10 year old in marvellous condition. He is such a well balanced dog and moved freely and soundly. He could show many of the youngsters how to do it! Not allowed to challenge for BIS but would have been a serious contender for the top honours if he had been eligible to do so. A lovely dog. Best Veteran in Show

Baby Puppy Dog 2. (1abs )

1.Robinson’s ROBMOND RARE AMARETTO. A 14 week old dog who has a nicely chiselled head and good expression. Has a good spring of rib, well off for bone and substance for his age. A very merry baby.

Minor Puppy Dog 3. (0)

 1. Robinsons LUNA WARDANCE. A good young dog who appealed greatly. Has a good spring of rib and is well balanced throughout. Moved soundly and well. Best Minor Puppy In show.

2. McFadden’s GLENBRIAR JOURNEY IN BLUE. A smart blue dog who is slightly longer cast than the winner. He ahs good bone and substance and scored highly in his front construction and movement

3. Wade’s BANEOFTORRY DOUBLE CHOC. A Liver roan and tan built on bigger and longer lines than the first two. Coat was well presented. Moved happily.

Puppy Dog 3 (1abs)

1. O’Keefe’s RYANGATE REASON TO CELEBRATE. A young dog with so much to like about him. He moved soundly and happily. Has the best of legs and feet and excellent substance throughout. Presentation was excellent. A worthy winner of Best Puppy in Show.

2. Petrowsky’s ELSPAN ONE SEDE TO ANOTHER. Another good puppy with a masculine head and expression. Presented well. Well balanced throughout but not so positive in movement as winner. Runner up To Best Puppy in Show.
