The cocker spaniel is a versatile breed of dog who was originally bred as a working dog specifically as a helpful companion to hunters. First and foremost the cocker spaniel was bred to find birds perched in the underbush and scare or "flush" the birds into flight at the right moment to give the hunter a clear shot.To do this the cocker spaniel must be able to display many different skills and disciplines.
Today, the cocker spaniel is a merry little dog that is also a serious gun dog. But, like most of the sporting breeds, the cocker spaniel is also successful in many dog sports besides its work in the field.
They are athletic, energetic and their muscular, stocky physique is perfect for many dog sports. Their ability and desire to please makes them a great partner. They are smart and relatively easy to train and they are a breed that does best if they have a job.
The ANKC has developed a title system programme where you are able to participate, learn and test your dog's ability within each discipline to ascertain a dog's level of understanding and commitment in the specific area.
some of THE AREAS OF DISCIPLINE INCLUDE:
Dog Obedience
Agility
Rally O
Tracking
Track and Search
Scent Work
Dances With Dogs
Trick Dog
Retrieving and Field Trials
Endurance
Lure Coursing
Flyball
Sprint Dog
If you are interested in trialling (competing) in a performance sport, your dog will need to be registered with the ANKC and you will need to be a member of Dogs Victoria (state body of the ANKC).
Information and forms are available on the Dogs Victoria website.
